Position overview
This role participates in all aspects of design, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of advanced equipment solutions within manufacturing and operations. Skills in design, develop, and validate sophisticated fixtures, jigs, and automation tooling for high-precision, micro-scale assembly operations are essential for success in this role. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of creating robust solutions for handling and assembling tiny, delicate components (sub-millimeter scale).
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead Precision Fixture & Tooling Design
· Own the end-to-end design lifecycle for complex fixtures, jigs, grippers, and automated work-holding solutions—from initial concept and 3D modeling through to detailed drawing creation and production handoff.
· Specialize in micro-assembly innovation, developing novel solutions for part feeding, orientation, alignment, and secure handling of miniature and fragile components where precision is critical.
· Design for manufacturability and durability, ensuring fixtures are robust, maintainable, and optimized for high-volume production environments.
2. Develop and Validate Automated Systems
· Participate in the conceptualization, mechanical design (using 3D CAD), and setup of universal assembly/test cells and new manufacturing equipment.
· Support hardware selection for automated systems, including sensors, pneumatics, robotics, and other electro-mechanical components.
· Build, wire, and assist in the installation, commissioning, and deployment of automation systems to global manufacturing sites.
· Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of robotics, vision, and control systems to ensure optimal functionality.
3. Ensure System Performance and Reliability
· Manage the fabrication, testing, and validation (e.g., Gage R&R) of fixtures and equipment, iterating designs to achieve repeatability and reliability.
· Provide expert-level troubleshooting for fixture and automation systems on the production floor, implementing effective and timely corrective actions.
· Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including design specs, test reports, maintenance manuals, and engineering drawings.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
· Act as a key member of the global automation team, supporting new equipment development and integration initiatives.
· Partner with R&D during design reviews to ensure new products are designed for assembly and automation (DFA).
· Train manufacturing personnel in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of new equipment.
· Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement, cost reduction, and cycle time optimization.
5. Supplier and Quality Management
· Evaluate, select, and manage external suppliers; participate in technical reviews and qualify equipment solutions.
· Review and optimize equipment designs from external suppliers to meet project specifications and quality standards.
