Purpose of Role:
The Senior Product Engineer (Upholstery) is responsible for the technical development, optimization, and standardization of upholstered furniture products. This role ensures product quality, compliance, and cost effectiveness throughout the product lifecycle, from design collaboration to manufacturing and testing. By managing engineering changes, maintaining product documentation, and ensuring consistent standards across factories, the Senior Product Engineer
contributes to the company's commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative furniture.
Responsibilities：
• Design Collaboration & Sample Development:
o Collaborate closely with designers to understand design concepts, translating them into feasible engineering solutions.
o Work directly with the sample room to create accurate and functional prototypes based on design specifications.
o Provide engineering input during the new product introduction process to ensure manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and structural integrity.
o Generate detailed CAD drawings and technical specifications for all upholstered products.
• Engineering Expertise & Material Knowledge:
o Provide expert technical guidance on upholstery materials,construction techniques, and manufacturing processes, including in-depth knowledge of foam densities, fabric performance, and leather grading, etc.
o Possess a thorough understanding of the materials, components, and parts used in upholstered furniture construction.
o Stay informed about the costing of required materials,components, and finished products, identifying opportunities for cost optimization.
o Optimize material utilization and explore alternative materials to enhance product performance, reduce costs, and improve environmental impact.
• Product Development & Engineering:
o Lead the engineering design and development of new upholstered furniture products, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and aesthetic appeal.
o Conduct thorough feasibility studies, prototyping, and testing to validate designs and ensure adherence to quality and safety standards.
o Develop and maintain detailed technical drawings, specifications, and documentation for all upholstered products.
o Optimize existing product designs for cost reduction, improved efficiency, and enhanced performance.
o Ensure consistent product standards across all company workshops & factories, reconciling any discrepancies and implementing corrective actions to maintain uniformity.
• Technical Expertise & Problem Solving:
o Troubleshoot and resolve complex engineering challenges related to upholstery design and production.
o Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to address product defects and quality issues.
o Manage the Engineering Change process (incl. ECR & ECN).
o Stay abreast of industry trends, advancements in upholstery technology, and new materials, including sustainable material advancements.
• Process Improvement & Standardization:
o Support the Chief Engineer to develop and implement standardized engineering processes and procedures to ensure consistency and efficiency.
o Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement solutions to optimize manufacturing operations.
o Contribute to the development and maintenance of quality control systems, utilizing data analytics.
• Testing & Compliance:
o Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive testing protocols for upholstery products, including durability, flammability, load, and material performance testing, adhering to relevant industry standards.
o Proactively ensure internal product compliance with company quality standards and relevant safety regulations.
o Coordinate testing arrangements with the testing team and maintain a secure, easily accessible digital database of test reports for tracking product performance, ensuring internal compliance, and facilitating audits.
o Monitor and stay informed of changes in relevant testing standards and internal compliance requirements, implementing updates as necessary.
• Product Documentation:
o Create and maintain clear, concise, and accurate product documentation, including assembly instructions, product specifications, material safety data sheets, and maintenance guidelines, ensuring user-friendliness for both customers and internal teams.
o Maintain a digital documentation library that is easily accessible to authorized personnel. Documentation will be provided in multiple languages as needed.
• Supplier Collaboration:
o Work closely with material suppliers to ensure the quality and consistency of materials.
o Evaluate and approve new materials and components for upholstery products.
o Travel internationally as needed to supplier and factory locations.
Essential Skills
• College’s degree in furniture related Engineering, mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in product engineering from Concept to Manufacturing, preferably within the furniture or upholstery industry.
• Strong understanding of upholstery materials, construction techniques, and manufacturing processes.
• Good knowledge in Total Quality Management.
• Demonstrated experience in reducing product costs through engineering optimization and leading successful product launches.
• Proven ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Strong leadership, organisation and project management skills.
• Experience in working with international supply chain is a plus.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD). Knowledge on using 3D modelling/rendering software is a plus.
• Ability to travel internationally.
