Job Purpose Statement:

An operating room nurse ensures the delivery of proper nursing care to surgical patients before, during and after operations at ParkwayHealth Center.

Key Accountabilities:

Operating Room Nurses are responsible for supervising and directing patient care in an operating room, while ensuring that proper techniques are used according to OT standards.

Plan and perform direct patient care completely and independently

1.Plan surgery cases for individual patients according to OR and anesthesia schedule

2.Ensure pre-surgery protocols, tests, and x-rays to support anesthesiologist

3.Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills while answering patient queries and explaining the treatment schedule

4.Take the written and verbal consent of patient and guardian before the surgery

5.Assist the patient in getting ready before surgery, ensure the patient has fasted, changed in the operations room dress and removed all jewelry items

6.Keep the shift news board updated with latest record of patient vitals taken during regular rounds in the surgical ward

7.Monitor post operational patients and communicate any point of concern effectively to the relevant doctor

8.Administer scheduled Intra Venous medications and maintain patient record chart

9.Sterilize and arrange surgical equipment and instruments and make the operation room ready for procedures

10.Scrub in surgery when needed, assist with handling of equipment during and after the operation

11.Count and record on sponges, needles, and other instruments used in the operating room before cleaning the OR room

12.Assist in post operational stitching, bandaging and transport of the patient to the recovery room

Provide high standards and safe patient care

1.Plans and renders high quality nursing care to patients within assigned unit, following appropriate ParkwayHealth protocols

2.Promotes a culture of safety and quality care delivery by following safety standards set by the Quality Management Department and Shanghai Health Bureau

3.Carries out surgeon’s orders in accordance with standardized techniques and procedure

4.Effects and maintains infection control procedures and practices accordingly

5.Ensures patient’s confidentiality at all times

6.Checks regularly to ensure emergency equipment are functional at all times

7.Cleans and disinfects procedural sets after use and packs them for sterilization

Ensure patient satisfaction with good, prompt and attentive service and clean, pleasant environment

1.Works in partnership with reception team to ensure a smooth patient flow to reduce waiting times and increase work efficiency

2.Maintains safe and clean working environment (including Operating Rooms) for optimal patient care

3.Works in close collaboration with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to provide optimal care and service to meet patient needs and expectations by providing timely, friendly, empathetic and courteous service to all patients

Maintains professional standards

1.Keeps abreast of nursing and health care related knowledge and skills through continuing education and development ( CNE)

2.Participates in nursing and quality management projects and activities

Exercises economy and care in the use of equipment and supplies

1.Helps monitor inventory for medication, supplies and equipment; Maintains par level and avoid over-stocking

Teamwork

1.Assists in the introduction of new staff to the ward; Teaches and supervises new nurses and other team member like the housekeeping and cleaning staff

2.Builds up a collaborative, helping relationship with fellow nurses as well as members from other departments.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education and/or professional qualifications (minimum requirements)

1.Graduate from an accredited Nursing College/University in the People’s Republic of China

2.Possesses professional license to practice nursing in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China

3.Minimum 3 years OR related experiences after graduation and

4.Preferably some work experience in a similar setting

Job Knowledge, Skills or Abilities (demonstrate skill in Administration, Management and Team working)

1.Demonstrates good customer service skills, with ability to relate to patients and their relatives

2.Good English skills is preferred.
