TITLE: Secondary School Learning Support (LS) and English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teaching Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS: College degree or higher

REPORTS TO: Secondary School Principal

JOB GOAL: The Secondary School LS and EAL Teaching Assistant will work as a member of the Student Support team to provide support, both in and out of classrooms, for identified Secondary School students with specific learning and/or language needs.

Functional Relationships: Secondary School Principals, MYP/DP/ID8 Coordinators, Counselors, Learning Support and English as an Additional Language teachers, Faculty, Administration Staff, Students, and Parents.

Role Specifications:
• Develop a supportive relationship with students, parents, teachers and counselors to maximize learning opportunities for LS and EAL students both in and out of classrooms.
• In collaboration with LS and EAL teachers, create and implement differentiated materials (word bank and lists, word walls, graphic organizers, visual supports, scaffolding supports, etc.) and strategies to facilitate LS and EAL students to access the curriculum.
• Participate in and provide updates and feedback to teacher/parent meetings as necessary.
• Assist in recording student progress and updating student records.
• Work with the LS and EAL team in sourcing and purchasing materials locally and internationally.
• Understand and implement BCIS, LS and EAL policies, procedures and practices.
• Maintain confidentiality about all school and student-related matters.
• Co-plan units and lessons with teachers on a regular basis.
• Co-teach as required using co-teaching models (station teaching, parallel teaching. lead and support, targeted small group, team teaching)
• Work individually and in small groups with identified students, both in and out of the classroom.
• Provide lunchtime and after school support to students as needed.
• Attend all team meetings and faculty meetings as required by the school administration.
• Carry out substitution and supervisory duties, within established acceptable guidelines, as required by the school administration.
• Serve as a role model at all times and in all areas of school life.
• Keep office space, classrooms, and teaching areas reasonably clean and tidy.
• Complete any other tasks as assigned by the Secondary School Principals or Head of School. For teaching assistant in grades 11 and 12:
• The teaching assistant for grades 11-12 will be expected to lead individual or small group enrichment sessions for DP and ID8 LS/EAL students.
• The teaching assistant for grades 11-12 will be expected to provide testing accommodations for LS/EAL students with approved testing accommodations from the IB. Personal Specifications:
• Teaching qualification and experience preferred
• Experience working with Middle and/or High School students preferred
• Flexible and motivated to learn new teaching methodologies and support strategies
• Excellent spoken and written communication skills

General Requisite Skills:
1. Minimum four years experience in a similar role, Bachelor degree in English or Education
2. Communication – effective communication, fluent in both spoken and written Chinese and English with the ability to provide translation services
3. ICT Skills – Word-processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, and database management. Mac-skills are an advantage. Must be willing to learn and develop a high ICT skill level.
4. Interpersonal Skills – Polite, positive and professional at all times in dealings with Chinese and English speakers within and beyond the school community in both oral and written forms of communication, tone, manner and presentation, being a school representative.
5. Professional Growth – Preparedness to grow professionally and to seek assistance and advice when necessary as well as an ability and interest in solving problems
6. Personal Initiative – seek opportunities to improve the work space and activities and propose changes to improve overall efficiency
7. Pride in work – meet deadlines and complete high quality work in required formats, keeping workspace clean and clear as well as keeping school information secure
8. Respect for school – understand and acting in accordance with the BCIS mission and philosophy to best serve students, parents and staff
9. Professional office demeanor – acts appropriately in confidential matters with parents, students, faculty and staff.

WORK YEAR: Salary to be established by Head of School with approval of Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Principal in accordance with Board Policies and Protocols.
